When your livelihood is connected to the weather, you become good at reading the skies and watching the signs for a change of weather or season. As the saying goes, ‘red sky at night, shepherds delight, red sky in the morning, shepherds warning’. The skies are sign posts and so are the stars. The leaves give forewarning and the animals’ cries inform.
For those in the city this skill is rarely needed, as our lives often bypass the elements; yet those in the country still have their eyes open to nature’s signs and warnings.
Let’s not become like the city dwellers with our faith and lose the ability to read God’s signs of the times.
Jesus complements the Pharisees on their ability to read the skies yet scolds them for their inability to read the signs of the times.
He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. Matt 16:2-3
